R.I.P. Donald “Duck” Dunn

one quarter of the best house band in the business.

To play in one of the great house bands is one thing Dunn played in two as he was part of the original Stax house band the Mar-Keys before later joining Booker T. & the M.G.’s. With them he played on the instrumental hit single “Last Night”.

Taking over from Lewie Steinberg as the bassist in Booker T. & the M.G.’s in 1965 meant that he hadn’t actually played on the band’s biggest hit and signature tune “Green Onions” but he did feature on some of the band’s later well known hit tracks and of course “Green Onions” was a staple of the live shows…

And so being in that band he went on the play on some of the greatest soul tracks to come from Soulsville U.S.A. Backing the likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett etc…

Added to all that work is the fact he played on one of the great blues albums ever, Albert King’s “Born Under A Bad Sign” – along with most of King’s other Stax releases – and then of course there’s the stint in the Blues Brothers Band… “We had a band powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline!”

There’s a number of videos up there of great tracks but hell it hardly covers Donald “Duck” Dunn’s CV.
